I wonder what % of Republican boomers that support the war in Iran also refused, in one way or another, to fight in Vietnam.

Would be an interesting stat to see.

That was a pretty common evolution they went through. My mom was a free love hippie that is now basically a Nazi. She can’t understand why I cut her out of my life.

The hippie to fascist pipeline is real. Their tendency to distrust the establishment means they also fall for typical fascists tactics like putting the blame on the establishment and a secret cabal in power for all their problems. Like in my country during Covid lockdowns these so called “spiritual” people voted for the blatantly fascist party.

As I said in another comment, it taught me that my father apparently only cared about the aesthetics of being a hippie, but there was never any deeper political ideology or understanding underpinning it.

I imagine this was the case for a lot of ex-hippies.

Also lots of people became hippies purely to rebel against their parents. Bet many dads back then had untreated war trauma and thus were quite unbearable parents.

That sounds plausible, but I don’t think that’s the case for my mom. I think she was just going with the trend, trying to be in the “in group”. I can say with 100% certainty a big part of her Nazi transition is the lack of empathy that she has.

          It’s honestly fucking tragic.

But it has taught me that my dad cared more about the aesthetics of the hippie culture, but never actually stood for any real ideology. Just shallow bullshit like music and fashion. And acid.

I suspect this is probably the case for a lot of ex-hippies.

          Real fucking shame.

And don’t get me wrong, the music was fucking awesome. I just wish there was more substance.

Interestingly, this made me think of George Harrison talking about visiting San Francisco in, I think 1967. He was struck by how vapid it all was.

However, he turned to spirituality instead of rationality.

Young men showed one of the sharpest rightward swings of any age cohort in 2024. After backing Joe Biden by double digits in 2020, voters aged 18–29 saw a massive gender divergence: The Margin Swing: Men under 30 swung toward Donald Trump by roughly 15 to 20 percentage points compared to 2020, with several exit polls showing Trump either tying or outright winning the demographic. The Widening Gender Gap: While young women continued to favor Kamala Harris by wide margins (roughly 18–20 points), young men broke heavily in the other direction, creating the largest ideological gender gap ever recorded among young voters.
Racial Diversity Among Young Men: The shift was especially pronounced among non-white younger men. Young Latino men split evenly or favored Trump, and young Black men shifted significantly rightward compared to 2020 exit numbers.
Key Drivers: Post-election analyses cited sharp dissatisfaction with the cost of living and inflation, a rejection of mainstream Democratic cultural messaging, and Trump’s aggressive outreach through alternative media (podcasts, streaming platforms, and the “manosphere”).

There are differences, actually from country to country. Austria for example pioneered the whole thing (at least in Europe) when, what is nowadays conservative mainstream, was in the international media reported as “nazi country doing nazi things”. Those stories stopped at some point or had gotten so hypocritical that they approached satire level. Not because those things aren’t “nazi” btw, but because they became popular in most Western countries.

Austria has been through at least 3 right populist cycles already, starting in the 1980s. Cycles, because unless the populist right manages to degrade democracy enough, they always blow themselves up due to their boundless corruption.Their voters remember for a few years (except for the hardened Nazi core) and then suffer from mass dementia and go back to those very same people who messed up the last time.

In short, Europe is just one stepb behind the US. The fascist traitors dressing up as patriots do encounter setbacks once in a while though, see Hungary.

When I visit my father I would walk with his next door neighbor. This guy never understood the whole idea of social agreements. What I mean by that is his daughter went to high school for free off the taxes of somebody else but now when he’s paying taxes and doesn’t have his daughter in school he bitches and moans that he has to pay and he shouldn’t have to. I’m like dude someone paid for your daughter so it’s your responsibility to pay for someone else’s daughter. Someone helped you so it’s a social agreement to help them. He doesn’t get it, it’s like you must be really stupid and greedy or something.

Considering the complete lack of correlation between issues that voters care about and the policies that politicians actually enact, I don’t think that merely voting makes boomers blameworthy.

Studies have repeatedly shown that politicians in both parties do not act in accordance with what their voters want, so clearly voting does not affect policy.

Seems to me you can handle it one of two ways.

One, you can punish the boomers. When Z gets in power, abolish pensions, Social Security, and Medicare. Let the old die from poverty and disease. And then you yourself won’t have any safety net when you’re that age.

Two, you can focus on the class struggle. Focus on weakening the billionaires who control us and who made up this bullshit in the first place. Target income inequality, access to services, and draconian employment practices. Begin the century-long transformation of capitalism. This is the harder road.

So which one will do more good?

As a millennial I find it a little funny whenever someone says that type of stuff about Gen Z, because they used to say that about us. I hate to tell you but the people that get into power are almost always the shit heads. It’s not a generational thing. It’s a wealth and privilege thing. The future Gen Z leaders will be the same entitled out-of-touch shitheads that they always are. The lower-upper class is where the rich elites get there stock of candidates from.

Boomers own 52% of the country, they ARE the class struggle. Over 55s together over 70%. I don’t think anyone in gen Z is operating under the assumption they could ever retire anyway? They’re not pumping out enough babies to fund their retirement. Neither are us millennials.

        This is a logical error.

        Over 55s own about 73%

What this number establishes is that a significant portion of the owning class is over 55. What it doesn’t show is that the boomers are the ownership class. If one guy over 55 owns 75% of the country, you still end up with

        Over 55s own about 73%

being true. You’re focussing on the wrong group of people.

        Here’s a fact:

Households with a white householder hold roughly 80% of the nation’s total wealth

Does this mean we should be mad at white people?

The one that will do the most good is holding guilty parties accountable, instead of presenting a non sequitir strawman.

People rightly hate boomers as a group because they are largely entitled spoiled brats who call everyone else entitled spoiled brats.

They are largely the living embodiment of moral hazard who deem themselves inherently correct and reasonable while being obviously short sighted hypocrites, who have indeed caused their children massive sanity/psychic damage to the point that its now a widespread practice for kids to cut off all contact with their boomer parents. They are the ‘fuck you, I got mine’ generation. They are the weak men who create hard times, while thinking themselves to be the strong men who create good times.

WASP Boomers are also the group that is actually most responsible for driving up housing prices and destroying the economy and society in that way. They consistently voted for NIMBY construction and tax policies. Most second+ homes are owned by Boomer ‘Mom and Pop’ landlords, not actually private equity firms. Yes the Boomers did create the political environment that gave rise to PE RE firms by voting to effrctively disenfranchise non WASP non Boomers, as well as destroy traditional pensions and replace them with 401ks, but they also are the most likely group to personally own a few other homes or have house flipped a number of times.

Yes, we should have actual policy responses that specifically target these and other specific anti social economic practices and tax them into non viability, but we can’t, at least not at a national level, because of the dysfunctional government voted for, for decades, by Boomers.

The current crop of billionaires are the inevitable result of the Boomer mindset codified into formal societal rules. Yes we should specifically tax billionaires out of existence, but we also need to dismantle the systems that allow for billionaires to arise in the first place.

Presenting a dichotomy of ‘kill all boomers and abolish social safety nets’ vs ‘tax billionaires and do class struggle’ is a laughable misdirect.

What would actually do more good is a combination of in depth and honest economic and tax policy reform, wealth taxes and such, accompanied by acknowledging the fact that many Boomers have been abusive hypocritical sociopathic narcissists in every dimension of their lives and have caused considerable direct harm to people personally.

The zeitgeist of Boomer hate is never going to end until Boomers collectively take accountability for the harm they’ve caused, economic and psychological.

The Boomers do not get to spend their whole lives playing at being rugged individualists while actually consistently rigging the system for their own preferential treatment, and then when that largely fails them because they got out sharked by better sharks, then get to play the “we’re all in this together guys” card.

No. We’d be idiots to trust Boomers not to continue to act selfishly while disguising their self serving greed behind a different rhetorical justification. All the Boomers have ever collectively shown themselves to be is arrogant selfish lying assholes who will betray you when its benefits them personally, and then belittle you for not seeing that coming.

I’ll believe a Boomer is serious about class struggle when they actively advocate for something like exponentially increasing marginal property tax rates on home values, for personal or business ownership… when they commit to actually mandating their own outsized wealth be redistributed to those with less.

Instead what we see in the most Boomer over represented areas is … total repeal of property taxes.

And honestly, at this point if you go to a local Democratic party meeting, see a bunch of protesters on the side of the road, or meet with the local liberal or progressive organization’s members – the majority of the most active members will be boomers in a huge portion of the country. Outside of the cities and/or the odd left-leaning rural area, young people don’t seem to get involved.

So, to blame the problems on just that generation but also all of that generation is just wrong.

Millennials grew up with Bush II and saw their country change after 9/11. Younger groups don’t understand what not living in a surveillance state is even like. It’s their normal.

Sidenote about local democrats— they’re disgusting. A loop up only propping up their favorite candidates, using their influence to push around elections despite being a limited amount of people many with bad takes, and intentionally they have their candidates run with hidden views so that they win on popularity alone.

Like, still do it though because there’s really only upsides to influencing them, but just ugh.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this and I think it’s accurate. No doubt they worked, but they live in the modern age with modern luxuries and probably the best large scale economic climate ever for a single generation. So many boomers are so financially sound it’s almost comical. RV’s fucking everywhere. 2nd homes. It’s like a slap in our faces.

I’m speaking about American boomers specifically. Especially since they seem so deadset on pulling the ladder up behind them.

Exactly. The standard QoL between 1800, 1900, and 2000 is immense. But between 1970/80/90/00/10/20 - it all feels extremely similar or even a bit worse. Cars vs Horse was a big change to out QoL, Landline vs iPhone is arguably lateral or only slightly up. And I feel the same can be said for the majority of innovations over the last 30 years… Like they’re nice sure, but they didn’t really revolutionize our QoL like the generation prior to the boomers experienced.

Bomers got it “as good as it got” up to now, but weer able to enjoy the average bull run of the last 50 years. Meanwhile younger generations are entering right as it started to taper off.

Not having kids, my bloodline ideally ends with me. At my age my mother already had me and was pregnant with a second child she couldn’t care for, I’m 26 and soon to be 27. I’m hoping I die an irrelevant, ignoble, and funny death.

I’m just making my way through the universe, like everyone else, including boomers. My point was that people seem to think that boomers, or any generation for that matter, have a big meeting and decide to fuck up the following generations en masse. I think oligarchs are causing the problems, not 70 year olds, who had the nerve to buy a house because they could. If you were a boomer I bet you wouldn’t have done anything different, because you would not have seen the harm in it. As always the harm comes from the top, not a whole generation.

To the Boomers who are chill and hate capitalism as much as we do: I’m sorry you’re getting blamed for the politicians’ actions.

To the Zoomers and other young people, particularly in AmeriKKKa : I don’t see any reason why we’re not gonna end up in the same boat as the Boomers when we grow old. You are not unlearning the capitalist distortions passed onto you by your elders; you take defense contractor, finance, police, and military work with just as much ignorance as prior generations; you still do not oppose imperialism; and you know about climate change and Epstein and you still refuse to take up arms against capitalists and the State. (Like the Boomers, if you do not fit this description, my ire is not with you! But it is almost certainly with your friends, your family, your coworkers, and your neighbors.)

Frankly, it’s gonna be just like the Boomers: the good ones are being crushed by capitalism in silence and forgotten. If you’re wondering where most of the good Boomers are, check the cemeteries. Same with Zoomers. I see it happen every day. And when we do grow old, the vast majority of us are gonna mostly be conservative weirdos with rich backgrounds who abused their way to the top in a system designed to reward only abuse, because the rest of us will have been killed off.

And for everyone: your generation is not special. Every generation has their own unique challenges, some are harder than others, but you are not somehow magically exempted from developing the same oppressive behaviors of previous generations unless and until you spend the time unlearning capitalist distortions and obliterating the systems that instill capitalist distortions.

Give Zoomers a few more years and I guaran-fucking-tee you our politicians are gonna be milquetoast neoliberals just like the rest because we haven’t actually learned a goddamn thing from our suffering, because suffering doesn’t teach you shit, and because Zoomer capitalists are still capitalists and therefore exert bourgeois class solidarity over any solidarity they might have with their generation or any other subset of the proletariat.

That is exactly the same gripe i have with most of my GenX brethren - for a generation that was defined by punk and revolt, a surprisingly large amount of them ditched the things their generation stood for to make sure they have a good place in the rat race. I know that many did not have a lot of choices because the boomers clinge to the levers of power to this day, but to take part in their system that so many of us despised is akin to being a traitor.

And especially in the US the younger generations are more than willing to carry on the torch, radicalized by their civic religion and evangelism. Other countries are not immune, but they generally have a better understanding that what the US are doing is problematic.

I still blame the boomers. Their greed and powerlust have fucked up the planet and is still fucking up societies.

Some of the boomers were the hippies that made a big stink about ‘Nam. And the environment. Much as I think the boomer generation were spoiled kids that spent their lives grabbing money from generations before and after them, a significant part was not and will never be, and imho that goes for any generation. It’s amazing how many young people voted for Trump or Afd, for example.

When I say the it’s the boomers fault I mostly mean the ones in power. Ofc the avg boomer isn’t malicious, but selling their house (to a corp) they got for pennies so they can throw money into a slot machine instead of leaving it for family is a huge issue I’ve seen from boomers in my area.

Yet your use of language regurgitates deliberately constructed ageism propaganda. So perhaps be more mindful of how you use it in the future, so as not to uncritically repeat their propaganda and deflect from actual meaningful class war?

Only a small % of boomers were hippies but they were able to have a huge impact on society. Many boomers were normies that haven’t changed that much in their life.

Yeah, nah. None of us have houses and most are in the same position I’m in: I will have to work until I die. There’s no retirement in my future. If anything I’ll just be moving further left as I get older.

A big part of the reason that boomers are so awful is that they own all the houses and made sure their pet politicians made the value keep going up over time by limiting the amount of housing being built.

Our circumstances are so drastically different from the boomers that there’s just no way we’re going to be just like them. I do agree that we have to be mindful of the warnings you’re mentioning, but I don’t think it’s even possible to follow in their footsteps. They did a thorough job pulling the ladder up.

Me too lol, I’m a Zillenial.

As I have said to others: just because we suffer doesn’t mean we learn anything from our suffering. Give us a few years to turn 35 and you will see capitalists our age pulling up the ladder just like our parents did, although we’ll probably do it using pseudo-inclusive language and pseudo-therapy speak.

If anything I’ll just be moving further left as I get older.

Yeah me too, and I absolutely believe you, but we’re leftists in a leftist space. The rest of our cohort are not like us yet. In particular, we need to teach our cohort a class conscious analysis of the world, and make this proletarian class conscious position unignorable by the capitalist class.

I mean I get what you’re saying. Economic desperation could drive us to being greedy ladder puller uppers just like the boomers.

I don’t know. Maybe. I know that I’m in my 40s and only becoming more liberal and more likely to vote to help others. And that kind of voting mentality could lead to stripping power from the ultra wealthy and clawing back some power for the middle class.

I’m not getting the impression that millennials and younger are going to be greedy on the epic scale boomers have been.

I don’t see any reason why we’re not gonna end up in the same boat as the Boomers when we grow old.

There’s a variety of very well documented reasons.

I can’t be bothered enumerating everything you’re ignoring to make that statement but very briefly, the next 50 years will not be as prosperous as the last 50 years as Milennials and Gen X clean up the mess left by boomers.

I think you stopped reading where you quoted me. I am absolutely not denying that things are bad for Zoomers or even that the vast majority of us are fucked…but the ones who survive are less likely to consider themselves victims of capitalism.

Like if we don’t learn to turn our criticism inwards, and we don’t fight against the system so at least more anti-capitalists and victims of capitalism survive into old age…we’re just gonna end up reproducing “Boomer” abuses. Yes things are worse for us, but we’re so fucking callous, just as callous as the people who raised us, just as uncritical and ignorant as the people who raised us, that we’re on track to reproduce all their bullshit as a group.

Just because you suffer doesn’t mean you learn. As a corollary, just because you suffer more doesn’t mean you learn more. Zoomers are suffering without learning. Lots of Boomers also suffered, and many were killed by capitalism in silence. You’re dealing with a subset of Boomers who is increasingly likely not to feel like victims of capitalism.

I guarantee you, wait for Zoomers to turn 35 and you’ll see our true colors. It’s gonna be more capitalist politicians, the same old neoliberalism perhaps with a new coat of paint, same old imperialism (looking at you DSA!), same old AmeriKKKa ruining the world for everyone else. We’re not fucking special. Look at our non-reaction (as a collective!) to Epstein; look at how we still work for these monsters, still pay taxes to these monsters, still door-knock for these monsters’ politicians, still fight in these monsters’ wars, still join these monsters’ police departments. We’re just as capable of being monsters as our parents, and just like in the past, the system will reward the most abusive among us.
