I know we have our complaints about the browser, but I liked this one :)

    Maybe questionably truthful.

But at this point, I’d settle for a not-Cyberpunk future. The prospect of a total Chrome monopoly horrifies me, hence I’m all for this ad.

It’s a great ad! Sadly the underlying message is simply not true. Regardless of the browser you use (and I do use firefox) the old internet is no longer there. Now it’s just four apps full of brain dead content. It’s quite sad actually. Loved the video though, it made me smile :_)

The old internet is still around. It just doesn’t show very high on most search engines because of SEO bullshittery

I started blocking sites like Facebook, Amazon, Instagram and every AI slop in my search results and it made everything so much better.

Check out my Myspace page, while you’re there you can find me on Digg and google video! /s

I used to read a lot of comics on the internet, pretty sure I hit mid to high 60s of bookmarks. 80% of them no longer exist.

Even the newer sites for things like finding niche products have been wiped, I used Massdrop for an age to get some good tech, now its owned by corsair and sells absofuckinglutely nothing.

The modern rules of the internet are “If it doesnt make more money than god then it’s not worth shit, if it does, then it’s bought out by a shady conglomerate then used to harvest your data”

I don’t know, small personal websites and webrings are having a bit of a comeback. Federated networks are humming along ,if not growing. AI is, ironically, making it much easier for people to build their own tools and ditch SaaS.

I still have hope for a decentralization comeback.

I’m working on a website, and to ensure it had the old Internet charm I’m doing everything from scratch. Learning html and css on the go and using bright colors. I hope some friends would make their own sites at some point so we could have our own little web ring, or find strangers who are doing similar things to me. I’ve been using wiby.me to find random cool sites but I wonder if there are places where people who are in a similar niche can hangout (that’s perhaps more active than !keepwriting@lemmy.world

The Internet you loved is still here.

No it isn’t. The internet I loved is long-since dead. This is the same shit internet. Firefox doesn’t magically bring you to a wondrous new world of memes, and sites can still collect enough data on your device usage to build massive advertising profiles for you, despite what one may have convinced themselves of with a plethora of extensions. Also feels weird calling out browsers with built-in AI, considering the CEO’s dreams to integrate AI even deeper into Firefox.

It’s a cute ad, but the core messaging is flawed.

While Firefox alone doesn’t transport you to that internet, I think the point is that browsers like Firefox are one of the pieces that makes up that older experience. Fediverse being another, I would say a lot of us are here because we remember this style of social media.

They have improved the intentionality of the AI features, I wish they had it opt-out and easily configurable from the start. I moved to Zen a while back (which still relies on Firefox pushing out updates)

Waterfox didn’t come out of thin air, though. It still needs Firefox to provide an updated browser code so they can do their changes. I doubt they could handle a full browser standalone on their own.

Oh yeah. But, they rip out all the ai. I’ll stick with that until Firefox makes it impossible (which they almost certainly will).

          I’ll move on after that.

An LLM in my browser is completely unnecessary and actively useless

I also think some outreach is important, especially if they can get that through memes instead of paying Facebook/Google.

Having more people using Firefox instead of Google chrome is a good thing. If nothing else, websites will have more of an incentive to make sure websites work on non-chromium browsers.

And hey, if a few of those new users donate to the project, they can be less reliant on Google and sponsored content

I’ve been ride or die with FF since before Chrome was a thing. I keep Vivaldi installed for a few things, but FF is my daily driver.

I know that Mozilla has made some decisions that I don’t agree with, but the Internet would be worse off without FF.

Firefox is controlled opposition for Chrome so that Google can claim they aren’t a monopoly in the browser scene. It’s why Mozilla always makes stupid decisions in spite of making an otherwise quality browser software.

The internet of the past also didn’t need 4GB of RAM to render a page.

Mozilla is just enshiitifing on a different schedule than the rest, they will end up in the same place at the end. there are lots of pre-enshittifiaction firefox forks that are much better. Try one of those instead.

The forks will not be just fine because they’re dependent on Mozilla for the new features and highly important security updates.

That may be true but librewolf, waterfox, zen, ironfox, etc don’t have large companies with funding from google to push out features and security updates as fast as possible. Meaning that if Mozilla goes down, then all those forks go down with it unless they can find lots of contributors and funding.

That’s true for a hard fork, not a downstream fork

Most of these other browsers are downstream forks. I’m not aware of any popular/reputable hard forks of Firefox

I have to keep a version of Chrome around because Firefox refuses to support or won’t support web USB. But other than that my daily driver is Zen. Firefox based. And I wouldn’t trade it.

Yes Firefox has pretty much been my daily driver since before it was called Firefox. And the UI overhaul in zen definitely elevates it. I wish the Mozilla Foundation was less focused on AI and advertisement bullshit and more focused on things like UI improvements or web USB support etc. The underlying engine is pretty decent. But it’s the foundations behavior that really makes it not viable for a lot of people.

Firefox is pretty great, but I prefer privacy and security by default, which is why I run librewolf only over VPN. I could go TOR, but man that’s a pain.
