BC already moved to permanent daylight time this year - it’s just a matter of time now (pun not intended).
Alberta has also followed suit I believe
I want permanent daylight saving time, but we should do it because it’s a good idea NOT because the Americans are doing it. We shouldn’t be doing anything to imitate the Americans
It’s probably very practical in most of Canada, particularly the north, but it’s not much chop further south or closer to the Equator. I’m in Australia, it’s especially a pain in the arse if you have to move between states to work.
It’s practical for Victoria and Tasmania, they have a lot of sunlight during the day down there. Queensland it’s a pain in the arse, especially up north.
Except pizza, we kinda nailed pizza.
Looking at the parliamentary docs, setting a permanent time was agreed upon by everyone, but they agreed not to move forward until the USA agreed to so as well.
This was just a few years ago when I found those docs.
Edit Now that the U.S. House has passed the legislation, the bill is headed to the Senate, although its future remains uncertain. If New York were to adopt the legislative changes, Ontario could potentially move forward with abolishing the practice, as Bill 214, which was passed by the Ontario Legislature in 2020, maintains that the province will eliminate the ritual if New York and Quebec do the same.

And
These guys act like their whole economy operates in one timezone and the sky would fall if they found out people had to deal with other people living outside their bubble.
Alberta just did. BC already did. I think Sask also removed daylight savings.
Sask never did daylight savings iirc
They didn’t?
From the start??
BC already did
BC Followed YT.
BC: YT stopped daylight savings?
Pretty sure we were waiting on washington state, who was waiting on the us federal governments permission, and then we just got tired of waiting.
My weird proposal is that I think the western provinces should be permament daylight savings, while the eastern provinces should be permentantly standard time. The impact would be to narrow the time difference between east and west by 1 hour, which should allow for more options in the job market.
For instance, a company based in Toronto may not be willing to start an office in Vancouver if there’s only 5 hours of overlap per work day, but may be if there’s 6 hours of overlap. Ditto for remote workers.
We should all say F it and go UTC
Every place will just use a local offset to make it manageable, so I don’t see how that’s helpful.
“to make it more manageable” - this is the part I don’t get.
Why do we HAVE to start school/work/whatever at 08:00 local time? It’s just a number that represents a time of day, it doesn’t matter what that number is. I’m perfectly fine starting work at the exact time of day I always do and calling it by the UTC time, 11:00.
If everyone just used UTC then 11:00 is 11:00 everywhere, regardless of the part of the day it falls on locally. In some locations that’s early morning, some mid-day, some afternoon, some evening, etc. Business hours would be simple and universal - “o we’re open 12:00 - 20:00” and everyone in the entire world would know what time they’re open without needing to account for timezone offsets, savings times, etc. That’d also be really helpful for companies and employees that are global - “in this US office we work 11:00 - 20:00, that EU office works 09:00 - 18:00”. No more needing to do what I do all the time which is things like “we’re going to move that meeting to V PT / X CT / Y ET / Z UTC / Q CET”… or the even worse thing where people say “we’re doing it at R time” without bothering to specify a timezone and then everybody has to know, research, or ask wtf timezone they’re talking about.
It seems like there’s this strong belief that “08:00 MUST be early in the day in my locale” but… what does it matter?
Okay, rant over. I have extremely strong feelings about time and timezones because it’s a continuous source of tomfuckery.
Oooo! Let me counter-rant!
True, timezones are somewhat arbitrary, but it did shake out this way for a reason. Since the number on the clock represents a time of day there’s advantages to everyone having shared cultural ideas of what those numbers mean. Very helpful for media: think of a character waking up, it’s dark outside and their clock shows 2:00. We all currently agree on when in the night that is so need no further information to get the context. Textbooks, music, movies, you name it; having this shared understanding helps convey quite a bit of information due to this shared understanding and that’s lost if we don’t have timezones.
Another example is when traveling: you don’t need to relearn what the clock will show at different times of day just because you’re in a different part of the world. Just change your clock to match theirs and now you understand it all at a glance. The hotel serves food from 7am-9am? You know that’s in the morning and roughly what part of the morning too.
If all of our clocks show the same time no matter what part of the world, you’d still need to apply a local offset to see what time of day it is somewhere else (basically a time zone anyways). Also, would different zones (states, etc) adopt the same offset? It’d be helpful to coordinate/synchronize all sorts of things if they did and oops now you’re inventing timezones again.
If you’re having so much trouble booking a meeting, just use the UTC offset and be done with it, and then the rest of the time enjoy the fact that knowing it’s noon somewhere tells you so much more than just the number on their clock. Or move to China.
Hopefully.
I read an article that went over how more light in the morning is better for humans. Something about a “time lag” between solar time and our clocks, the bigger the difference, the worse it is for our health. The current proposal is more evening light which is daylight savings time. One of the scientist interviewed said their wouldn’t be sunshine until 9:30am where they lived.
I’m all for the clocks not being changed twice a year as long as it’s early morning sun.
I did my PhD in a field related to this. Morning light is absolutely the most important. Even more so for school age kids.
School age kids don’t get daylight in winter. We lock them away indoors until a brief, lunch time recess. Then it is back inside until 3pm. They get home just in time for sunset, when they are locked back indoors after dark.
The only daylight they can feasibly get in winter is after school, and standard time deprives them of it.
Dawn-simulating lamps/alarm clocks are more than adequate for meeting early morning circadian needs; there is nothing capable of replacing the utility of evening daylight.
That’s true for everyone, but note that I’m talking about the morning here.
PM daylight does nothing for your circadian rhythm and melatonin production.
That’s not actually true. Physical activity, exercise affects circadian rhythms as well, and is a far more important consideration.
Again, the “circadian rhythms” factor of morning daylight can be adequately addressed with a simple bedside smart lamp providing consistent “morning light” to wake up to. That little lamp can start your winter day two (or more) hours earlier than your latitude would otherwise allow.
Stadium-style lighting over my local metro park, simulating afternoon daylight, isn’t nearly as feasible an option.
In most cases the difference between 9:30am and 8:30am is immaterial. You’re still waking up and going to work in the dark.
But at least this way you’ll get a bit of light in the evening after work instead of spending your whole day in darkness.
Morning sun is better from a health perspective.
Morning sunlight can be adequately replaced with a dawn-simulating dimmer lamp next to the bedroom window.
Nothing replaces evening daylight.
Evening daylight can be adequately replaced by dusk simulating dinner lamps next to the bedroom window.
Nothing replaces morning daylight.
Morning light just wakes you up. You can replace that with a lamp.
Evening light lets you go outside, walk, see the sun, see trees and houses, be more active. You can’t replace that with a lamp.
How does a lamp in my bedroom window replace an hour of afternoon daylight at my local metro park, or any of the other, non-bedroom places I want to be?
Are you not understanding that I don’t want to be in my bedroom at 4:30pm?
You’re still indoors. Also you’re only looking at the worst day of winter without considering the effect the change produces the rest of the year.
If you want to wake up earlier and be home by 3 you’re free to do so, but don’t force that on everyone.
Sure but you’re not getting any morning sun anyway because even with sunrise at 8:30, you’re probably waking up in the dark and going to work. So best to see sun in the evening instead of no sun at all.
It makes a huge difference. Sunrise isn’t a switch, dawn starts about an hour before sunrise.
Mornings are miserable regardless. Let the boss man have us at the lowest and worst part of the day.
When the work day is over, we should have some daylight left for our own use. That means DST.
If you want to shift your schedule talk to your boss or change jobs.
We still need morning light, especially for kids.
Kids don’t get daylight in the winter under standard time.
We send them to school before dawn. They are locked indoors until a brief recess at lunch time, then locked back indoors until 3pm. In winter, that gives them just enough time for sunset shortly after they get home.
In December and January, the only school-day hours of daylight they get to enjoy are the ones given to them by Daylight Savings Time.
Morning daylight is more than adequately replaced with a smart lamp next to your bedroom window. There is no replacement for evening daylight.
Why is it that between the arbitrary number we invented to tell ourselves when to do things, and the motion of The Earth, we see our numbers as sacrosanct and think we move the stars with our bits of ink on paper?
If light in the morning is good, lets just begin our occupations later! 8 isn’t even some holy time, lots of occupations begin at different times in different regions and within the same region!
As it is, the numbers are losing their meaning. Today, in the same time zone, sunrise could be at 4, or 5:30. In another time zone, 7:04 & 5:22. Our experiences of time are not the same.
Well now I don’t want to just for spite.
Just an American perspective… Who is this helping? What is best? Why? Do we choose the DTS where it’s dark in the early morning? Or choose one where there’s more light in the afternoon? I’m going to call dark mornings beneficial for companies and light in the afternoon beneficial for workers.
Or will they choose light in the morning and eternal darkness in the afternoon noon?
Somewhere in there you have issues with cars going east to west in the mornings or afternoons getting blinded and running over kids and others and things including other cars. 5pm when the sun light is in your eyes going uphill and you forgot to wash your windshield is a terrible thing. But it happens every day at different times of the day.
Finally there’s me and work from home. Me time. There’s no point in going to work to socialize for someone else’s profit. I must rather not car what time it is and just stay home and try to accomplish something to get payed. A midnight massage is just as effective as a mid day massage. Either way you can illuminate your massage table and you wouldn’t car what time it was. You just need to know how long you paid for that massage or how long you got paid to give it. I could be flexible and have my own hours for giving massages…say from 9am to 6pm. But I could also get paid a little more if I get someone in at midnight because their job ends at 11pm.
This whole 8am to 5pm is just business bullshit from before the computer and technology revolution. We should do away with it. Also Monday, Tuesday… Saturday and Sunday and then do it all again 52 times with a little party in between is just dumb. Keep track of that if you care for plants or want to know how old you are. I just don’t think counting time is important for me as much as it is important for some other asshole who wants to extract an amount of work from me and pay me less than what it’s worth. That’s really what time is all about… making billionaires.
Dark in the early morning and light in the afternoon are the same thing right? That’s what we’re getting.
The difference between sunrise at 830 and 930 seems minor. You’re still waking up and going to work in the dark.
But the difference between sunset at 430 vs 530pm is huge. You could get a whole hour of light after work you’d be missing before.
Right now it’s dark when I got work and dark when I got off in winter.
I strongly disagree that changing the numbers permanently will change when we do things. Not all jobs start at the same time. Some region’s 9-5 is an 8-4 for another region. What I do know is that 12 should be roughly noon, and having 1 or 2 be noon lessens our perception of time, especially between regions. More important than people having 8 at the same time is that 8 means the same thing between people.
My province already did this year and we knew it was happening last year
Please, it’s a useless concept in today’s world.
We already did that here in BC.
It depends. Is the time they’ll use metric or imperial?
